Whiffs of Provence in Michigan: A Romantic Lavender-Filled Wedding Shoot Up North

You needn’t take an overseas trek to the foot of Mont Ventoux or the gates of Sénanque Abbey to experience the intoxicating sight and scent of lavender fields forever. A whiff of Provençal charm can be caught stateside in the rolling hills of Northern Michigan, where France’s most fragrant treasure thrives. A stone’s throw from the cool, glimmering waters of Little Traverse Bay sits the lovingly tended Sweetwater Lavender Farm, where today’s romantic shoot was set. Kalin Sheick, the owner of this sweet-scented stretch of land, is also a wildly gifted floral designer, and she joined forces with some other wedding talents in town, including film photographer Carrie House and event planner Tanya Knickerbocker, to show off the natural beauty that they and their region can offer. Dreamy whites and galvanized grays gave their summertime creation a traditional French country vibe, while subtle touches of elegance balanced out the rusticity. Comme c’est romantique! The lure of lavender is everywhere, and the scene surely smelled every bit as heavenly as it looks.
Fusing modern and old-world elements, Sable & Gray’s calligraphed acrylic invitation was wrapped with a frayed silk ribbon fastened by a white wax seal.
The bride wore Bella Belle’s “Florence” pumps. Made out of silk and mesh, they’re hand-embellished with teardrop-shaped stones and beads.
Stems & Sprigs, Kalin’s floral studio, made this daydream of a bouquet out of lavender from the farm, zinnias, Queen Anne’s lace, and a mix of bell-shaped blooms.
“We’ve flowered for weddings big and small all across the great state of Michigan,” Kalin says. “I pride myself on an arranging style that is uniquely Northern Michigan, natural, and romantic. I’m a sucker for all the greenery.”
A lavender runner formed the focal point of this farmhouse tablescape.
Simply Sweet by Jessica whipped up this nearly naked cake, which was wreathed with sprigs of fresh lavender.
Champagne was also garnished with bits of purple passion.
