If the saccharine traditions that define the Hallmarkiest of holidays—yes, we’re talking about Valentine’s Day—make you more than a little bit queasy, you’ll find the perfect antidote in this romantic (but not cloyingly so) breakfast-in-bed shoot, photographed by the talented Izzy Hudgins, whose whimsical, playful pictures of people in love radiate just the right amount of sweetness.
“I don’t personally celebrate Valentine’s Day, and I honestly get a little grossed out by the abundance of red and pink and the hearts galore,” Izzy said. “I knew I wanted to create something that reflected a more intimate, heart-free alternative to the norm. Something for the couple who would prefer to stay home rather than fight for a dinner reservation on the busiest night of the year for restaurants.”
The concept for the shoot was sparked by the arrow pattern on a recycled cotton blanket that Izzy received from her friend Katy Skelton, a Brooklyn-based furniture designer who focuses on creating sustainable, eco-friendly goods. Inspired by hardware seen on a ship, Katy’s acrylic and solid brass “Captain’s Tray” also makes an appearance in the shoot, which is meant to be a kind of illustrated guide for how to pull off the best breakfast in bed for your better half.
So tell your significant other to forget the roadside roses, the chubby cherub card, and the heart-shaped box of stale chocolates. Steer him to this post instead. And read on for two honey-inspired breakfast cocktail recipes, as well as a fun free printable, from French Knot Studios, who styled the shoot to perfection.
Start by setting the mood with some sweet and festive handmade decorations, like these playful paper arrows that French Knot Studios created using the latest Cricut machine.
Isn’t this “love nest” banner darling? It can be all yours! Download the printable for FREE right here. Use a printer and scissors, or try out this fabulous new gadget for more ease and precision. Thread the cut-out letters on a half-inch wide length of ribbon to make the banner.
Make your honey a honey-inspired breakfast cocktail. Honey is, after all, an aphrodisiac!
HONEY FLOWER (SERVES 1)
♦ 1 1/2 ounces of citrus vodka
♦ 1/2 an ounce of St. Germain
♦ 3 ounces of tonic water
♦ Honey to taste
Shake ingredients with ice and pour. Garnish with a bit of honeycomb.
Bee Mine Bourbon Latte (serves 1)
♦ 1 shot of espresso
♦ 1 cup of vanilla almond milk (unsweetened) or any milk
♦ 1 ounce of bourbon
♦ Honey to sweeten
Serve over ice (as shown) or hot. You can also substitute chai for espresso.
Don’t forget to turn on some tunes.
Breakfast is served!
Avoid the schmaltzy gifts! Go for something simple, useful, and chic, like these handmade leather pieces from Satchel.
