Today’s feature is the brainchild of Charlie Burton, the editor behind The Natural Wedding Company, an online planning resource for British brides with eco-friendly, handmade weddings in mind. Like practically everyone else in the wedding industry, Charlie found herself falling in love with the revival of flower crowns, but as their popularity grew, they themselves seemed to be growing unwieldly large.
“Though I absolutely love them, I noticed that they were getting bigger and bolder,” Charlie said. “I felt that many brides might not feel confident or comfortable wearing such grand pieces. It got me wanting to share some inspiration for more understated, yet still incredibly lovely, hair flowers.”
To create the delicate pieces she was envisioning, Charlie worked with The Garden Gate Flower Company, which grows beautifully natural flowers and foliage for weddings and events on an organic farm in Cornwall. Soft, subtle, and oh so pretty, the final creations were captured by Taylor & Porter Photographs on a typically wet and windy day in the English countryside.
Frothy nigella, scabiosa, and will grass adornment
To create this frothy flower comb featuring a palette of powdery blue, snow white, and soft lilac, The Garden Gate Flower Company used scabiosas, nigellas, brodiaeas, anemones, and trembling grasses. “It has a gentle, old-fashioned romance to it,” Charlie said. “It’s a perfect example of how you can wear a lot of flowers in your hair but in a subtle way that wouldn’t make you feel self-conscious.”
Country garden flower comb with yellow roses
Fluffy yellow roses, white nigellas, and an architectural parsley flower were wired onto a comb to create this summery piece. “For me, it evokes the archetypal English country garden, especially with those loose and perfumed yellow roses still having a few leaves and buds attached,” Charlie said.
Field grass and honeysuckle hair adornment
To create this carefree, earthily pretty ’do, the florists simply tucked flowers and grasses into two tiny plaits. “I think this would be lovely for an autumn wedding,” Charlie said. “The very dainty grasses are called Panicum vergatum ‘Heavy Metal’ and have this exquisite way of trembling when you move.”
Pink flower hair comb
This romantic floral hair comb was made using a variety of pink and white flowers, including anemones, nigellas, deutzias, and scabiosa buds.
Pastel blue and lilac-colored flower comb
A smaller version of the nigella, scabiosa, and wild grass comb featured above, this piece is meant to be worn on the side of your head and works particularly well with a Swedish-style braid.
Dainty Fern Woodland Hair Flower
This simple but beautiful hair adornment was made from a dainty fern leaf and tiny white flowers. “This piece would be perfect for a bride planning a woodland wedding, as it would reflect the location beautifully,” Charlie said.
