Spanish Summer: An Exquisite Bridal Shoot at Mission San Juan Capistrano

We’re bidding adios to summer in style with an estival bridal portrait shoot set at Mission San Juan Capistrano, a 241-year-old California landmark whose meandering grounds boast exotic gardens, bougainvillea-draped archways, bubbling fountains cloistered by weathered adobe walls, a four-bell campanario, and a series of exhibits that bring the Spanish colonial era—and California’s multicultural heritage—to life. Often called the “Jewel of the Missions,” the site is also home to the Serra Chapel, a venerable place of worship said to be the state’s oldest surviving structure, and the Great Stone Church’s otherworldly ruins, where faithful migratory swallows come to nest from spring to fall, as they have done for centuries.
Although the historic outpost does not permit weddings beyond the walls of its Serra Chapel, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, day-after brunches, engagement shoots, and bridal portrait sessions are welcomed at the alfresco attractions. Here, photographer Jennifer Fujikawa brings out the distinct beauty of the backdrop, which especially befits brides of an old-world persuasion.
A handcrafted mantilla veil from Marisol Aparicio was draped over Lindsay Marie Design’s statement-making “Sorrento” halo for a bridal look that was at once classically and contemporarily romantic.
The bride carried a classic clutch of white peonies accented with astilbes and eucalyptus.
Green-stoned leaves in the second, more delicate headpiece brought out the sagey hues in a watercolored chiffon gown from Jenny Yoo.
