Signature Cocktail #42: Salted Lemon Sage Cocktail
By Lauren Kathryn on Oct 24, 2014 at 5:00 am in
Lemonade doesn’t have to be relegated to lazy summer afternoons. Using gin, salt, and sage, a beautiful Mediterranean herb with a musty-mint taste and a hint of pepperiness, our cocktail expert, Carlene Thomas, has transformed the classic dog-day drink into a brightly warming apéritif fit for fall.
When it comes to fall cocktails, most people can easily rattle off common foods and spices used: apple, pumpkin, cinnamon, and clove. One ingredient I seldom hear mentioned but always think of is sage. This beautiful dusty-green herb usually graces people’s palates around Thanksgiving, but why not add it to a cocktail? While typical lemonades are very cooling and sweet, the addition of salt and sage creates an interesting warming sensation, making the libation cool-weather appropriate.

Ingredients (Serves 2)
♦ Juice of 1 lemon
♦ 2 cups of water
♦ 1/4 cup of simple syrup
♦ 3 ounces of gin or vodka
♦ 1/8 teaspoon of salt (also add to rim of glass, if desired)
♦ A handful of fresh sage
Directions If desired, salt the rims of the glasses by wiping lemon around the rims and dipping them in salt. Muddle ingredients in glasses. Serve over ice. Adjust sweetness level according to personal preference by adding more water or more simple syrup.
