Signature Cocktail #41: Grapefruit-Lemongrass Cocktail
By Lauren Kathryn on Oct 10, 2014 at 5:42 am in
Some foods demand adventurousness. Take the grapefruit, whose versatility calls for a little experimentation in the kitchen. Its juice is used in many a libation, but if you find yourself turning to tried-and-true cocktail recipes (think Salty Dogs or Greyhounds) whenever you have this blushing citrus on hand, it might be time to break out of your cocktail safety zone. Carlene Thomas, our resident cocktailian, takes grapefruit where it’s never gone before in this brightly bold, herbaceous drink. Fresh Thai basil and lemongrass, which has a light and lovely yet exotically tangy flavor, give this grapefruit-based concoction an intoxicating note of farawayness.
Chances are you’re pretty familiar with the most common American kitchen herbs: basil, thyme, cilantro, and rosemary. But take a stroll through an international market, and you’ll find a plethora of unusual options that are begging to be tried in your next recipe. Two of my fresh Asian herb favorites are lemongrass and Thai basil, both of which not only add so much dimension to entrées but also make killer cocktail ingredients.
♦ 1 handful of fresh Thai basil
♦ 1 stalk of lemongrass
♦ 1/5 ounce of rum
♦ 1/2 grapefruit, juiced
♦ 3 ounces of water
♦ Dash of bitters
♦ 3 tablespoons of brown sugar
Using a citrus reamer, juice half a grapefruit, removing seeds. Add water, rum, grapefruit juice, bitters, and brown sugar to a cocktail shaker to combine. Add torn fresh basil to a glass with ice. Pour drink over top. Garnish with a lemongrass stalk.
