Rachel & Jon: A Rustic, Woodsy Winter Wedding in Iowa

A Christmas engagement followed by a cozy winter wedding seems serendipitously fitting for a bride like Rachel Bunting, who has a soft spot for the most wonderful time of the year and whose home typically assumes a Christmassy air long before the holiday arrives. “We always have our tree up the week before Thanksgiving,” says Rachel’s now-husband, Jon, who popped the question amid a mess of crumpled wrapping paper and a scattering of boxes after the last gift had been opened.
The Iowan couple worked with White Willow Events to design their December nuptials at Barnes’ Place, a family-owned barn venue in Adel that’s short on frills and long on charm. Making decorative use of pinecones, evergreen, and even mistletoe, the two tapped into the magic of the season with wintrily rustic details but sidestepped an overly overt nod to Yuletide cheer by opting for warm jewel tones—think ruby and emerald—in lieu of typical reds and greens.
Beribboned bouquets of jewel-toned blooms were designed by local florist Boesen.
Rachel adorned her classic updo with a shimmery crystal snowflake.
“It was unseasonably warm on Rachel and Jon’s wedding day,” says photographer Katie Lindgren. “Although there were hopes for a snowfall, we were thankful for the sunshine and warmth that allowed us to take beautiful portraits outside.”
Rachel’s bridesmaids donned mismatched chiffon dresses in a mix of jewel tones and woodsy neutrals. Cream-colored pashminas completed the look.
Farmhouse tables were set with winding evergreen runners accented by pillar candles and a flurry of fresh flowers.
The bridal bouquet consisted of peonies, anemones, orchids, evergreen, eucalyptus, and love-lies-bleeding.
