Pattern: A Granada-Inspired Wedding Shoot in Elk, California
Photos By McCall Burau of Lucky Malone

Spun from sought-after film photographer Erich McVey’s latest workshop, this exquisite photo shoot took place on a private coastal ranch in the community of Elk, a far-flung part of Northern California where forests and meadows meet sea. Here, the wistful loveliness of the scene is captured through the lens of attendee McCall Burau, who aptly describes it as “overwhelmingly beautiful.”
Called “Pattern” for the intricacy of its details and its subtly recurring motifs, the shoot was inspired by the colors and energy of Granada, Spain. “We chose a palette of mauves and burnt gold,” says creative director and stylist Ginny Au. “The lace of our Emily Riggs gown was such a complement to the theme, as it created a wonderful textural element with its finely detailed pattern. We paired the dress with bold tassel earrings, and the movement of our model on the cliffs, with her veil billowing in the wind, was a tribute to the spirit of Spanish dance.”
McCall was struck by the romance of the setting, which suffuses her images in an almost palpable way, and by the naturalness of her subjects. “The setting sun created a magical spectrum of pastels in the sky, and the coastal breeze, carrying the salty scent of the sea, added to the constant motion surrounding us,” she says. “The couple moved so effortlessly and intimately through the landscape, from secluded woodland trails to rugged ocean bluffs.”
