Mood Board #95: Spanish Moss & Gold
By Lauren Kathryn on Jan 23, 2013 at 7:17 am in Vintage
As I’ve probably mentioned several times before, Spanish moss is one of my great botanical obsessions. There’s something so enchantingly mysterious about it. Some might even say it has an air of spookiness. Growing on live oaks and bald cypress trees in humid Southern locales—Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina come to mind—it’s often associated with Southern Gothic imagery, and it’s the subject of all kinds of folklore. As one tragic tale has it, the moss originated with an Attakapas princess who fell madly in love with a young warrior from a neighboring village. Her father, a powerful war chief, did not approve of the relationship, and he forbade his daughter from seeing the boy. However, the lovers began rendezvousing in secret deep in the heart of the swamps. When the princess’ father discovered their clandestine meetings, he cut the warrior to pieces with his knife. Heartbroken, the princess grabbed the knife and turned it on herself, taking her own life. As the story goes, the Great Spirit was so saddened by this event that he hung the lovers’ flowing raven hair high up in an oak tree, where all could see it swaying in the breeze. Over time, the hair withered and grayed and spread from branch to branch and tree to tree, becoming a lasting reminder to all those who passed beneath it of the power of love and hate.
Legends aside, I’m completely drawn to the romantic wispiness of this floweing plant, and I think gold is a beautiful complement to its pale gray-green color. If you’re getting married in the South, there’s no better place to tie the knot—or take portraits—than under a moss-draped oak.
