Mood Board #47: Two Lovers & Twelve Sunflowers
By Lauren Kathryn on Sep 2, 2012 at 12:15 pm in Rustic, Country and Bohemian
Sunflowers, the cheeriest of summer-blooming plants, add warmth to any occasion, and we love seeing them pop up in weddings. Today’s board was inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers series. Van Gogh began painting sunflowers to brighten up the studio in Arles, France, that he planned to share with Paul Gauguin, his close friend (and also the guy who supposedly cut off his ear, but that’s another story). “I’m thinking of decorating my studio with half a dozen paintings of sunflowers,” van Gogh wrote to fellow artist Émile Bernard. “A decoration in which harsh or broken yellows will burst against various blue backgrounds, from the palest Veronese to royal blue, framed with thin laths painted in orange lead. Sorts of effects of stained glass windows of a Gothic church.” The intensity and vibrancy of his sunflower paintings can be attributed, in part, to innovations in pigments that enabled him to incorporate striking colors, such as burnished ochre and chrome yellow, into his palette.
We’re smitten with this cake, based on one of van Gogh’s sunflower still lifes and designed by Wendy Kromer for Martha Stewart Weddings. She used oven-dried piped meringue to recreate van Gogh’s bright, scraggly-petaled blooms, and the painted-on buttercream frosting mimics his bold, textured brushstrokes.
Many of the sunflowers depicted in van Gogh’s paintings have furry, chrysanthemum-like blooms that look like giant dandelion heads. This variety of sunflower is known as the Teddy Bear sunflower, and we’re extremely fond of it. Stop by Design Sponge and check out this fabulous floral arrangement that incorporates Teddy Bear sunflowers, bright orange flowering eucalyptus, fuchsia celosia, seeded millet, and black calla lilies.
For more sunflower splendor, get swept away by one of the most captivating day-after sessions we’ve ever come across, shot by Stephanie Williams in a hidden sunflower field on Hawaii’s North Shore.
