Pittsburgh-based event designer Melissa Crawford brought the multifaceted vibrancy of Morocco to her own backyard in this lushly layered garden party shoot, its many splendors crystallized through photographer Jenni Grace’s lens.
“One might have looked at my garden a few weeks back and been completely overwhelmed by its overgrown, junglelike appearance, but all I could see was potential,” Melissa says. “I knew that with a little love and a lot of sweat, it could be transformed into something incredible. So when Jenni and I decided that our next photography workshop would have a Moroccan theme, I knew this magical little outdoor space would be the perfect setting.”
Using bold colors, variegated textures, intricate patterns, and the alluring gleam of lantern light, Melissa and her creative team transformed the tangle of greenery into a warm, inviting oasis that beckoned like the jewel of North Africa.
Created by Fresh Cut Prints, the invitation suite drew inspiration from Moorish architectural elements. Moroccan-red watercoloring was accented with tiny flecks of gold leaf for a touch of the luxurious. The pattern on the envelope liner called to mind Moroccan tilework.
The bride was outfitted by Glitter & Grit in Anais Anette’s “Sage” gown, a handmade frock whose texturally intricate crocheted lace is balanced by its sleek and simple silhouette.
For the botanical aspects of the shoot, Jenni and Melissa tapped the green thumbs behind Pittsburgh’s greenest floral studio, greenSinner, which uses locally grown and sustainably sourced flowers in its arrangements. Wrapped in Moroccan-inspired fabric, the bridal bouquet consisted of sunset-colored dahlias and spray roses accented with showy celosia, seeded eucalyptus, and tropical fronds.
Amber, rust, and chocolate brown added earthiness to the palette.
Beauty Justified keep the bridal look beautifully understated with muted earth-toned makeup and a simple updo adorned with a cluster of purple foliage and sprigs of celosia.
A cascading centerpiece featured roses, orchids, dahlias, ferns, fronds, poppy pods, and trailing amaranthus.
“We envisioned lanterns in different shapes and sizes to suit different décor purposes,” Melissa says. “Vintage Alley Rentals provided a perfectly eclectic array of lanterns, as well as many other pieces that really helped tie the entire look together.”
The Butterwood Bake Consortium provided a delightful pastiche of homespun pastries, including a nearly naked cake topped with fresh figs and herbs.
