Love More Than Love: A Darkly Romantic Shoot Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe

It seems rather fitting to usher in the week of All Hallows’ Eve with a broodily romantic shoot inspired by one of Gothic literature’s most beloved—and most tormented—greats: Edgar Allan Poe. Forgotten in the woods of Washington, a swath of crumbling, overgrown ruins offered a spectral setting that looked like it could have been spun from the wistful writer’s macabre imagination.
“One of the beauties of living in a place like Washington is being able to explore the mysteries that lie deep within the forests—the hidden ghost towns to which no roads lead, sites slowly being reclaimed by the wilderness,” says Tashana Klonius, mastermind and photographer behind the beautifully dark shoot.
Tashana spent weeks rummaging through antique stores, sifting through dusty, discarded objects of old in search of perfect props for the session. The moodily detailed scene that she created included ink-black furniture, blood-red velvet, and tarnished silver goblets nestled among earthy beds of moss. Nods to two of Poe’s most well-known works—“The Raven” and “Annabel Lee”—evoked some of his great themes: undying devotion and the idea of “a love more than love,” a love so enduring that not even death can extinguish it.
