Liz & Kevin: An Eclectic Autumn Wedding in Pittsburgh

Kevin Hartbauer, who works for the electronics company Daktronics, popped the question to his longtime love, Liz Moore, while the two were camping beneath a canopy of stars and redwood crowns in Northern California. His grandmother had given him the heirloom ring. Nature had given him the backdrop. “It was a beautiful, starry night, and we were sitting around a campfire,” recalls Liz, a registered nurse. Despite the twinkle and flicker, however, it was still too dark for her to get a good look at her new finger bling. “We celebrated for a good 30 minutes before I asked Kevin if it was okay to turn on my headlamp and see the sparkler!”
Fortunately for the Pittsburgh pair’s photographer, Dawn Derbyshire, there was plenty of light when the two tied the knot on a bright, unseasonably warm fall day at Old St. Luke’s Church. An Edgewood Club reception followed. “We chose historic venues, as it was important to us that our wedding feel authentically vintage,” Liz says. In a nod to her love of reading, the bookish bride incorporated “lots of literary touches,” such as handcrafted bookmark favors and table numbers made from antiquarian books. The event space was filled with fall foliage and enough candlelight to illuminate every detail.
“Food, music, and photography were the most important things to us at the beginning of the planning process,” Liz says, “ but right before the big day we had a little room in the budget to up the florals, and it was so worth it!” Sapphire & Lace, the couple’s florist, used dahlias, amaranths, thistles, ferns, and winged everlasting to create a dramatic fall bouquet in a palette of burnt orange and burgundy.
“We both really loved the first look, especially since it was in my parents’ backyard,” Liz says.
The couple chartered an antique coach to transport their guests. The bold orange bus, a 1957 GM model TDH4801, was once part of San Diego’s transit system.
Liz wore an embroidered lace fit-and-flare gown from Ashley & Justin.
“My veil flew out of my hair right as the church doors opened for me to walk down the aisle,” Liz recalls. “Luckily, my amazing planner, Nicole, was right there to help pop it back into place, and apparently no one saw this but me and Kevin!”
Ferns and billy buttons in milk-glass vases cheerfully greeted guests at the entryway. Stained, beribboned, and hand-lettered by the bride, escort cards doubled as bookmark favors.
“We used lots and lots of rosemary, so everything smelled amazing,” Liz says of the romantically lit dining space.
“Try to enjoy the planning process and hire people who you make a connection with,” Liz suggests. “All of our vendors were amazing.”
