Liz & Jason: A Vibrant Spring Wedding in Charleston, South Carolina

Liz and Jason Humphrey, who met as undergrads at the College of Charleston, were inseparable from the start. After graduating, they moved in together, and not long later, Jason’s mother offered the couple heirloom stones, bequeathed to her by her grandmother, to use specifically for an engagement ring. “I was so honored,” Liz recalls. Although the pair designed the ring together in collaboration with a local jeweler, Jason managed to pull off an intimate surprise proposal at home, complete with candlelight, a scattering of rose petals, and a bottle of bubbly. “It was perfect,” Liz says, “and I loved that it was in the home we had created together, just the two of us.”
The duo didn’t have to look far for a wedding site, as they knew they wanted to tie the knot outdoors on Charleston’s waterfront. “We met in Charleston and had built a shared life there, so it meant a lot to us to be married in the city that brought us together,” Liz says. For their venue, the couple chose Harborside East, a modernly elegant event space that charmed them with its unbeatable views of Charleston’s harbor and skyline. Enlisting the help of Pure Luxe Bride, a boutique wedding planning studio, the two created a cheerily bold setting by mixing bright colors with classic navy blue—a nod to both Charleston’s seafaring character and the coastal New England town just northeast of Boston where the groom grew up. “We wanted to create something punchy and preppy with a subtle nautical vibe,” the bride says.
Although the morning of Liz and Jason’s wedding brought gusty winds and heavy rain, stormy skies couldn’t dampen the colorful scene. “We were all speechless when we walked into the reception space,” says wedding photographer Dana Cubbage. “A glamorous chandelier hung from the top of the tent, vibrant florals arranged by Branch Design Studio brightened up the entire area, and happy guests dined family-style at two long tables flanked by blue Chiavari chairs. After dancing the night away, the newlyweds exited amidst the drizzle and hopped into an antique Bentley—the perfect end to an amazing wedding day.”
Liz paired her princess-like ball gown with a playful pair of glittered rose-gold slingbacks from Kate Spade.
Hand-stamped muslin sachets, each filled with a handful of fragrant lavender bud confetti, came from Pressed Cotton, a purveyor of artisanal wedding goods.
Liz’ bridesmaids wore breezy blue chiffon dresses from Donna Morgan.
“The flowers were very important to me,” Liz says. “Branch Design Studio combined my desired florals—fluffy coral peonies and fuzzy dusty miller foliage—with garden roses, poppies, ranunculi, and astilbe to create soft yet bright bouquets that were truly more beautiful than I could have ever imagined.”
“Our ‘first look’ was, by far, my favorite part of the day,” Liz says. “Getting to see each other in a private downtown setting and having our own quiet moment together was really special. I really don’t think anything else compared to it all day.”
“Remember that some things, like the weather, will be totally out of your control,” Liz says. “In the end, all that matters is that you’re marrying the love of your life; everything else will fall into place.”
“The stunning table arrangements were my favorite part of the décor,” Liz says. “I cannot give enough praise to my wedding planner, Pure Luxe Bride, and my florist, Branch Design Studio.”
“We wanted to give our guests a little bit of Charleston to take home with them, something that reflected the two of us and was also useful,” Liz says. “In the end, we wound up walking around town and taking photos of our favorite places to eat, drink, and sightsee in the city. We used a wonderful company called Coastermatic to turn these pictures into coaster favors.”
