12 Cakes of Christmas #12: Light and Shadow

On this day before Christmas, we’re capping off our holiday cake series in the loveliest of ways with a wintry photographic vignette that explores the intriguing interplay between light and dark. One of the shoot’s central elements is a scratch-made red wine cake, organically iced with a deep chocolate frosting, swathed with contrasting gold leaf, and topped lighthandedly with a whimsical spray of freshly picked flowers—a spindly scarlet ranunculus here, a sprig of Queen Anne’s lace there. At once playful and moody, this charming confection was made by artist Tessa Pinner, the heart and (sugar-dusted) hands behind Pylon Cake, a burgeoning South Carolina bakery devoted to creating beautifully bespoke cakes that celebrate both form and flavor.
Although Tessa’s creations may appear to be standalone works of art, she prefers to view each one as an integral part of an irreducible whole, a small snippet of a larger story that’s best savored in its entirety. Here, the narrative is fleshed out with the help of film photographer Chris Isham, who crystallized every detail so exquisitely, and ModFete’s floral designer Katelyn Pinner, who brought rich textural and tonal variety with her artfully unruly cascades of blooms in shades of oxblood, ochre, and buttery white.
