Lauren & Ben: A Classic Destination Wedding in Mexico

Things have been known to go hilariously awry in instances where family and friends play matchmaker, but when loved ones of Lauren Burtis, a real estate agent, and Ben Tidwell, a high school math teacher, decided to set the two up, they wound up facilitating a match made in heaven. After dating Lauren for only a year, Ben felt sure she was the one and surprised his sweetheart with a heartfelt proposal in colorful Charleston, South Carolina—her favorite city.
For their March nuptials, the coastal-loving couple set their sights on a breezily chic destination fête along a more tropical waterfront: palm-dotted Playa Mujeres, an unhurried seaside haven just outside bustling Cancún. “We went for a beachy-elegant look,” Lauren says. “We wanted the wedding to feel classic and formal yet relaxed enough to suit the setting.” Cool grays and crisp whites were offset by lush greens, pops of gold, and a vivid aqua hue reflective of the Caribbean’s crystalline waters.
“Our wedding was absolutely perfect,” Lauren says. “It was the most relaxing, enjoyable day, as we were surrounded by friends and family members, including those who brought us together.”
The couple tied the knot at the Finest Playa Mujeres, a modern resort situated on a paradisiacal stretch of peninusla north of Cancún.
Elegantly designed by Meagan Tidwell, the invitations were tucked into aqua-lined envelopes and sealed using gold wax stamped with the couple’s monogram. “We wanted to include an element in our wedding that we could have for the rest of our lives, so we enlisted Allison R. Banks to create a custom monogram for us,” Lauren says. “We incorporated it into numerous details, including the invitation suite, cocktail napkins, cups, and even Ben’s bespoke bow tie.”
Lauren’s bridesmaids wore playfully preppy gray-and-white striped dresses with mismatched necklines.
A single white ranunculus was pinned to the lapel of Ben’s summery seersucker suit.
“My favorite moment was walking down the aisle with my dad,” Lauren says. “As I turned the corner, I saw Ben’s face for the first time that day. We didn’t see each other before the ceremony, and it was so surreal and exciting to finally be seeing each other.”
“The ceremony was so sweet and special, as Ben’s youngest brother and best man officiated,” Lauren says. “Everything felt so personal to us, reflecting our story and our love for God. We both felt an overwhelming peace and joy throughout the whole day.”
A mariachi trio performed during the reception, which was held at the Finest Playa Mujeres’ open-air Sky Bar.

I'm loving the mismatched necklines on the bridesmaids! The entire affair is fresh with a twist of preppy. So lovely.
