Kristen & Chris: A Rustic Southern Wedding at The Laboratory Mill

For Kristen Starnes, love was the result of taking a misstep—quite literally—in the right direction. The Southern belle met her future fiancé, Chris Wyatt, when she “ever so ungracefully” tripped over his book bag while hurrying to her seat on the first day of a calculus class at UNC. The stumble sparked a conversation, which led to a friendship, then to a romance, then to a proposal at the “very romantic and historic” Graystone Inn in Wilmington, North Carolina.
On a sunswept day the following fall, Kristen and Chris exchanged vows in rustic Southern style at The Laboratory Mill, a former Lincolnton cotton factory that has been artfully converted into an inviting event space. “As a nod to the venue’s history, we decided to incorporate cotton bolls into the décor and floral arrangements,” the bride says. “Our planner, Nekia Miller, worked with our florist, Sharon Sturgess, in finding special ways to feature this fluffy bloom.”
Homespun touches included kraft table runners, persimmon jam favors made from scratch by the women in Kristen’s family, and hand-lettered paper goods created by graphic designer Adé Hogue, who happened to be the best man.
For dinner, caterer Cindy Clontz served up an array of down-home comfort fare, including sweet potatoes with all the fixin’s, cornbread casserole, spicy shrimp, and cheesy grits. A night of dancing was kicked off by Chris and Kristen’s first twirl to a song by alternative country crooner and North Carolina native Ryan Adams. Captured by lifestyle photographer Crystal Stokes, the shindig ended with a sparkler send-off and the newlyweds cruising away to wedding bliss in a 1940 Ford convertible.

What a beautiful collection of pictures. Flowers obviously played a massive role in your wedding and boy do the photos look amazing thanks to them!
