A Sweetly Handmade Wedding in Sonoma’s Wine Country

There is often perfection to be found in imperfection, as Rena experienced when Vahid asked her to marry him while they combed the rocky, tree-fringed shores of a quiet cove beach on the outskirts of San Francisco’s famous Muir Woods. Vahid was so nervous that he accidentally slipped the engagement ring on the wrong hand and finger. “The proposal was beautiful, emotional, and comical,” Rena recalled. “It was perfect.”
The Californian couple decided to the tie the knot at Relais du Soleil, a rambling ranch deep in the heart of Sonoma’s wine country. The venue’s name, which means “a place to rest in the sun,” reflected the laid-back tone of the late September wedding, a true family affair captured by photographer Sonya Yruel. Although it was the groom who proved himself to be a Renaissance man of do-it-yourselfness—tackling everything from crafting the signage to refurbishing the chandelier that hung over the rustic outdoor bar station—mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends all had a hand in the day’s charmingly homespun details. Even the duo’s dog, Ziggy, played a role in the festivities; clad in a blue bow tie hand-sewn by Vahid, the terrier trotted the ring down the petal-lined aisle.
This time when Vahid slid the ring on Rena’s finger, there was no slipup. “I had painted a tiny heart on my ring finger,” Rena said. “When it came time to put the ring on, I could tell Vahid was still fumbling for the right finger, but then he saw that heart.”
